The layered bed.

A bed layered with linen pillows and a pink sandstone coverlet

A bed is composed, not made. Notes on the layers, from the mattress up, and what each one is for.

A well-dressed bed is not a matter of more. It is a matter of each layer having a reason to be there. From the mattress up, this is how we think about it.

First, a protector

The layer nobody sees. A good protector keeps moisture and allergens away from the mattress and otherwise stays out of the way — quiet when you turn over, and fitted so it does not shift. Protectors that earn their place under the sheets.

Then, sheets

The layer you actually feel. Bamboo viscose and TENCEL™ Lyocell are cool and smooth; a brushed finish or a jersey knit is softer and warmer to the hand. Choose by how you want the bed to feel in the first minute. Sheets for the first quiet hour of the night.

A duvet for weight

An insert does the warming; the cover does the looking. A lightweight insert suits warm rooms and warm sleepers. A medium weight carries most bedrooms through the year. Duvets and coverlets, made for layering.

A coverlet for texture

Folded at the foot of the bed, a cotton coverlet is the layer you reach for at three in the morning. It also gives a plain bed something for the light to fall across.

And the pillows

Two to sleep on. Shams behind them, if you like the bed to look finished. A protector on each, so the pillow you chose stays the pillow you chose. Pillows that know when to be soft and when to be still.

That is all. Five layers, each with a job. The rest is the room.
